The Iron Curtain - What was it? The Iron Curtain took place from 1946 to 1991 in Europe. It was a both a figurative and literal boundary put up around cities in Europe to attempt to separate the "Eastern Bloc" (groups of eastern communist countries) from the newer western democratic communities.
